Standing for Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display, SED HDTV technology is quite promising for those who want the best possible picture. It utilizes the same technology as your traditional CRT (cathode ray tube) that you probably currently have in your living room, but shrunk down to offer the same slim design we love in plasma and LCD televisions. These were on display at the 2006 CES, and they were impressive! Beating out the picture quality of the other flat technologies (plasma and LCD) while still offering the cool flat-panel design.

The result is a display that its creators (Toshiba and Cannon) argue will generate a bright picture without the delay that can be seen in LCD and plasma TVs. Toshiba is boasting a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, absolutely slamming plasma's 3,000:1! Blacks are significantly darker than plasma, LCD, DLP, and even modern CRTs.

Response time is also much improved, to only 1 millisecond.

Standard size will apparently be 55" to start. Unfortunately there's no word on pricing yet, but expect to pay a premium for these amazing sets when the first come out. If you've got the money, I think these will be worth it. You will have to wait, however. Toshiba is now aiming for 4th quarter of 2007 to release the new units. The good news with this is plasma and LCD may drop further in price, to make them more attractive, in anticipation of SED.

Another technology on the horizon for televisions is OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). More on those as the units become closer to production, but we will see them first in small displays like cell phones and digital camera screens.
